Q2-2024
In April, we had the pleasure of welcoming Dr. Marina and Mr. Amir Khalil from FOUR PAWS to the Blue Cross of India. This visit highlighted the deep and fruitful collaboration we have enjoyed with FOUR PAWS for nearly a decade and half.
We are immensely grateful for the invaluable support and partnership that FOUR PAWS has extended to us. This collaboration has enabled us to make significant strides in animal welfare, rescuing and rehabilitating countless animals annually.
BCI began its partnership with FOUR PAWS in 2010. Together, we have achieved remarkable milestones in animal welfare across India and Southeast Asia.

Some key accomplishments of our partnership with FOUR PAWS include:
- Shelter Facilities: Establishing safe havens for a diverse range of animals across multiple locations.
- Rescue Services: Providing round-the-clock rescue services for sick or injured street animals, including complex technical rescues.
- Adoption Success: Facilitating numerous successful adoptions of dogs and cats, giving them loving homes.
- Animal Birth Control (ABC): Implementing effective sterilization programs to control street animal populations.
- Mobile Hospital: Deploying India’s first “hospital-on-wheels” for on-site treatment of street animals.
- Street Animal Feeding Program: Ensuring food for street animals during critical times, such as the COVID-19 lockdown.
- Disaster Relief: Participating in missions during natural disasters, providing essential veterinary treatments and emergency food supplies.
These achievements would not have been possible without the unwavering support and collaboration of FOUR PAWS. Their dedication and innovative solutions have profoundly impacted the lives of countless animals.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to FOUR PAWS for their continued partnership and support. The visit by Dr. Marina and Mr. Amir Khalil reaffirmed the strength of our collaboration and our shared commitment to advancing animal welfare in India. Together, we will continue to make a significant difference in the lives of animals in need.
20th July 2024 – Celebrating the legacy of Smt Usha Sundaram
On her 100th birthday, we at Blue Cross of India celebrate and honour the incredible legacy of our co-founder, Smt. Usha Sundaram. Her life was a remarkable tapestry of pioneering achievements and unwavering dedication to animal welfare. As India’s first female pilot, Usha’s aviation career began after moving to Bangalore with her husband, who became the Director of Civil Aviation in the Government of Mysore. She was the first graduate of the Government Flight Training School in Jakkur, and her career soared from there.
Usha started as a co-pilot to her husband, flying many of India’s leaders, including Jawaharlal Nehru, Vallabhbhai Patel, and Rajendra Prasad. She continued to pilot for Nehru after her husband took up administrative duties with Tata Airlines. Her notable flights included rescue missions during the partition riots of 1947 and a speed record-setting flight from England to India in a piston-engine aircraft, which still stands today.

In 1959, Usha co-founded Blue Cross of India with her husband Capt. Sundaram, beginning in their home at T-Nagar and later incorporating in 1964. Her passion for animal welfare laid the foundation for our organization. Usha’s pioneering spirit and unwavering commitment to protecting animals have been the cornerstone of our mission. We express our deepest gratitude for her remarkable contributions, which continue to inspire and guide us. Join us in commemorating the enduring impact of her life’s work on animal welfare.

Great Comeback Stories
This section celebrates remarkable comebacks and honours our dedicated vets, para-vets, animal caregivers, and volunteers. Their tireless commitment goes beyond duty, breathing new life into animals and offering them a fresh chance to find their place in the world.
Tank
I was minding my own business near the Marina Beach, when a bigger dog decided to make my ear his afternoon snack. Next thing I knew, I had a wound crawling with maggots—talk about a bad hair day! I was pretty sure I’d end up as the poster pup for “What Not to Do on a Walk.”
But then, along came my hero—a kind human who saw me and thought, “This guy needs a rescue squad!” One call later, the Blue Cross team swooped in like a canine SWAT team. They scooped me up, evicted those maggots from my ear, and gave me the royal treatment. I went from mangy to magnificent in no time!
Now, I’m back to living my best life, ear intact and swagger fully restored. Huge shoutout to the amazing human and the Blue Cross crew for turning my disaster into a comeback story. You all rock—like a chew toy that never breaks!

Dhana
I was living the good life near a tea shop on the city outskirts—endless biscuits, belly rubs, the works. Was it the sugar – I don’t know but out of nowhere, I started growing a “lump” that soon became so big it felt like I was carrying around a second dog! —4kg of pure misery hanging off my tail.
I couldn’t sit right, walk right, or even wag my tail without feeling like I was dragging around a boulder. I thought my days of carefree tail-wagging were over. The lump was growing so rapidly that a few weeks more and it could’ve had its own zip code. But lucky for me a kind soul saw my plight and decided it was time to call in the cavalry.
Enter the Blue Cross team, my heroes! They scooped me up, rushed me to their hospital, and got to work. After hours of deft scalpel work and skilled excision and a lot of TLC, I was finally free of the monster. I felt like a new dog—light as a feather, or at least a dog without a 4kg hitchhiker!
Now, I’m back in my old stomping grounds, a little shy but so much happier. Thanks to the amazing folks who helped me out, I can finally enjoy my biscuits and belly rubs without the baggage!

Great Rescues
So there I was, minding my own business, exploring the heights of a 20-story building in North Madras when—whoops—what do you know? I got myself stuck between these narrow grills. Not my finest moment, I’ll admit. I was up there for what felt like nine lives, but the humans tell me it was over 12 hours. The apartment residents, bless their hearts, didn’t just leave me hanging. They called in the big guns—firefighters and the Blue Cross rescue team. I like to think I was a bit of a celebrity up there. Anyway, these brave folks show up and quickly realize the only way to reach me is by rappelling down from the terrace. So down they come, like superheroes in harnesses, to rescue little ol’ me. They carefully freed me from my embarrassing predicament and scooped me up in a net like some prized fish. I’m happy to report that I’m back on solid ground, none the worse for wear. I’m back in my territory now, with a valuable lesson learned: curiosity didn’t kill the cat, but it sure got him stuck between some grills!
The BCI MoHo (Mobile Hospital) – This quarter

This quarter, our “Treatment on the Streets” initiative covered a total distance of 5337 km. During this period, our dedicated team addressed 324 unique cases through 1620 visits. This effort was facilitated by the deployment of our specialized mobile hospitals, known as “MoHo’s,” as well as our efficient follow-up units using Paravets on Wheels, referred to as “PoW.” These units, operated by trained paravets and vet-assistants under the remote guidance of veterinarians, played a crucial role in providing primary diagnosis and initial treatment services to animals in need. Despite facing capacity constraints, our teams remained committed to delivering essential care to street animals, demonstrating our unwavering dedication to their well-being.

Our “Treatment On The Streets” initiative is supported by several generous sponsors.
